EU vs. United States? I beg to… hmm… argue.

I’m not sure I disagree with the BBC’s Paul Reynolds on this one, but I can’t completely agree with him either. He paints, I think, the differences too large and the similarities not large enough. The article caught my attention and I decided to comment because I’ve been watching the formation of the EU and noting the similarities between it and the early United States, especially the US, though some similarities may have existed only on paper.

Reynold’s article follows a question and answer format so I’ll follow suit.

Will this lead to a United States of Europe like the USA?

The world has changed, but no one has noticed.

The story is getting some media attention, but no one, other than those directly involved, seems to be very excited. This is a landmark event equivalent to invention of the locomotive or the first personal computers. Of course, no one noticed those events either until many years had passed.

Saddam, the Commission and McCarthy

Andrew C. McCarthy contributed an article, to the National Review, in an apparent attempt to dampen the shock of the 9/11 Commission Report. A couple of things struck me.

Ah, the silence is deafening

I’ve long been suspicious of former President George H. W. Bush’s silence throughout his son’s presidency. It is almost unbelievable that he has said so little concerning the day’s politics, especially since his son so desperately needs support. I’ve kept my mouth shut, as I had no evidence, but now my suspicions are confirmed. Bush Sr. does not support many of his son’s policies. He seems to object to the same things as Jr.’s other critics.

“Former President Bush believes the U.S. should have sought more support before invading Iraq and feels his son did not work hard enough to secure the support of allies.”
