For those of you feeling safe…
posted in Politics by themaiden |I’ve heard, in support of President Bush, two arguments more than any others. One involves the claim that our economy is better because of Bush than it would have been without him. To that, I say ‘Take a look at what you pay for gasoline.’ The second claim, and the one I’d like to address more fully, is that we are a safer country now than we were a few years back, having been led these years by our guns and glory President.
What I’ve noted here before and what the world, if one reads news sources from outside the United States, appears to have known for some time now, is that our war has not made us one whit safer and has in fact done just the opposite. We’ve given the Muslim radicals just the persecution they needed to capture the hearts and minds of their neighbors.
“American direct intervention in the Muslim world has paradoxically elevated the stature of, and support for, radical Islamists, while diminishing support for the United States to single digits in some Arab societies.”
This really isn’t surprising, nor should any aware and educated individual find it so. When a people is targeted by some enemy, that people bands together. History has proven this tendency repeatedly. And now our experiment in pre-emptive war has proven it once again.
On “the war of ideas or the struggle for hearts and minds”, the report says, “American efforts have not only failed, they may also have achieved the opposite of what they intended”.
Indeed, our efforts have produced an effect opposite that sold to the public. We have, in effect made our situation worse. Liberals and bleeding hearts have been warning of this for some time, but here we have it from the office of the Defence Science Board in a report to Donald Rumsfeld. That’s right. The conclusions I am presenting here come from a report written for Rumsfeld, a chief architect of this administrations foreign policy and decidely not a bleeding heart liberal.
We’ve failed. It appears that everyone knows it, and we’ve just elected a bastard who’ll ’stay the course.’
