Why we are not at war…

posted in Politics, Society by themaiden |

A very good post by Unclaimed Glenn Greenwald set me on a search for something I wrote many many posts ago, so I thought I’d give it new life.

Greenwald’s post is about the War in Iraq, and, well, how it isn’t technically a war. The US hasn’t actually declared war on either Iraq or on terrorism ( nor has the US declared war at all since the early forties ). It really puts the shrill cries of “we’re at war” into a new light, and it takes some of the wind out of the president’s claims of ‘wartime powers’. No war, no powers.

At any rate, sometime back I considered the question.

[...] See. Your question only has punch if the assumption is allowed that the war and the methods employed are justified. If that assumption stands, you are preaching to the choir. Otherwise you, and Benson, are suggesting that everyone, even individuals who disagree, ought to get on board with the administration’s decisions. Once again, you are recommending we shoot the cat, and protect the country by eliminating those things that make it worth protecting. So, it looks to me like the two-fronts are 1) the questionable ‘war’ on terror and 2) the ‘war’ on expression by those who complain not about what others say but about the fact that they say it.
