Evolution News & Call it a Knockout

A debate between Stephen Meyer and Peter Ward in Seattle has gotten a bit of press lately. Apparently, Bruce Chapman considers the debate a knockout of Ward by Meyer, of ‘darwinism by ID. It is interesting though that nowhere in the article is it mentioned that the reporter, who rules in favor of the Discovery Institute’s Stephen Meyer, is in fact the president of the Discovery Institute. That is hardly fair. Now, Chapman, like anyone else, has a right to his say but where there could be a bias, how about admitting it up front like decent folk, eh? And it would be a hard case to make that Chapman isn’t biased.

Jonathan Rowe on our “Christian” Nation

Take a look. Rowe is eloquent and his article is terribly relevant.

Based on my meticulous studying of this issue over a number of years, I have concluded that millions of people are being mislead by the likes of D. James Kennedy, David Barton, Rod Parsley, William Federer and others into believe the “Christian Nation” myth. If it weren’t for the millions who believe this twaddle, I would indeed be tackling a strawman. In terms of the practical effect of exposing their myth %u2014 if they realize that the US wasn’t “founded” by Christians to be a “Christian” nation, that indeed the key founders were theological Unitarians, thus not Christians as they understand that term, that they never “owned” the Founding as they were (mis)taught, they’d be less zealous about trying to “Reclaim America” and perhaps adopt a more “live and let live” attitude about culture and society.

Unclaimed Territory - by Glenn Greenwald: Anatomy of the

As much as anything else, Bush defenders are characterized by an increasingly absolutist refusal to recognize any facts which conflict with their political desires, and conversely, by a borderline-religious embrace of any assertions which bolster those desires. It’s a world-view which conflates desire with reality, disregards all facts and evidence that conflict with the decreed beliefs, and faithfully embraces any assertions and fantasies, no matter how baseless and flagrantly false, provided that they bolster the mythology.

Dispatches from the Culture Wars: Creationist Speciation: A Case Study

Worth a look. ID is not religious, anyone?

To those who claim that we’ve never seen one species turn into another, I give you the Oklahoma University IDEA Club. It used to be known as the Creation Science Society. In fact, their webpage initially said:

Welcome to the University of Oklahoma IDEA Club website! We are no longer the Creation Science Society. Our new name is Intelligent Design & Evolution Awareness Club. That’s IDEA Club for short!

The Feds Trample the Republic?

Something here disturbs me. Its highlighted.

The case drew national attention, in part, because of Rosenthal’s status as a leading author and proponent of marijuana. It also underscored the federal government’s position that medical marijuana is illegal, it has no medical value, and the will of California voters has no affect on federal drug laws.

Court Overturns Pot Grower’s Conviction - CBS News

Should federal law always trump state law? It isn’t supposed to. In fact, it should only trump local laws on Constitutional issues. I don’t like it.
