Boston Tears
posted in Politics, Society by themaiden |I am in Boston for the week. There is a lot of history here. The city is the stomping ground of many of the men who created this nation. There are statues, stones, markers, and plaques littering the landscape to commemorate what occurred here around 1776. Lexington Green is a few miles away. The tea party… The admittedly over-rated Paul Revere… The Massacre… The Green Dragon… Franklin’s birthplace…
I can only imagine what the founders thought and felt, and I can only imagine what they would feel now. I imagine that they would feel sorrow at what has become of their creation, sorrow that they gave their lives… that they stood up to the only superpower of their time and risked their lives for freedom only to have their descendents cash it all in out of fear… not out of fear of some real threat but ought of a vague fear of a weak and disperse enemy with little ability to do harm.
Our ancestors stood up to the English Crown and won freedom. We, as a nation, stand up to a loose band of criminals, and cower. We cower by surrendering our freedoms to a would-be tyrant because he promises protection. We cower by sacrificing principle. We cower by chipping away at the stones upon which the nation rests. We cower by building cells around ourselves and padding them with promises of safety.
Safety be damned!
The dead, fortunately, do not cry, but walking around this city, I have been.
