Can you tell The difference?

posted in Religion by themaiden |

Fun post at ‘import Mind.Reason’:

After reading a discussion about different beliefs I realized that the difference between an atheist, an agnostic and a theist can be summarized with their responses to the simple question

“Do you have a dog?”

It depends what you mean by “a dog”

Perhaps it does. Can you elaborate?

Love it! I just wonder … would a Satanist answer by saying “No … but I do have a cat”?

Its a pretty good post, and a pretty accurate one in a lot of ways.

I’m not sure what a Satanist would say. Satanism, after all, is just Christianity upside down so I’d think something like “I refuse to believe that that barking thing out back is a dog and anyway I never feed it” would be the right answer.

The theist example isn’t too good. If you go to a theist’s house, there is all sorts of traces that the owner has a dog. There are collars and dog beds and maybe even dog food. There are poems to the dog, and maybe even testimonials about the benefits of having one. You just never actually see the dog itself.

    ohwilleke,

Yes. That’s true. You would likely find indications of that sort. You’d be less likely to find direct evidence of the dog like dog hair, dog slobber in the bowl, wear on the collars and such– though even that could be faked.

Probably explains why I’m an agnostic.
