Weed makes ya crazy

A new study linking marijuana to “psychotic illness” is out.

Using marijuana increases the risk of one day developing a psychotic illness such as schizophrenia, according to a study that provides some of the strongest evidence yet linking the drug to a mental disorder.

Smoking marijuana ups risk of schizophrenia: study

Very scary.

Drugs make you stupid. Some would even argue that ‘gettin stoopid’ is the whole point of doing drugs. Take a look at the slang: ‘baked’, ‘fried’, ‘whacked’, ’stoned’, ‘wasted’, ‘trashed’. All very attractive. Anyway, drugs make you stupid. It is really hard to argue that point. Spend a little quality sober time around ‘users’. That is why I don’t do drugs and why I rarely drink alcohol– yes, yes, also a drug–, except, of course, when attending my girlfriend’s son’s private school’s fundraiser at the country club and I never get thoroughly trashed. Hurts too much the next day.

The point though is that this very scary article about pot upping one’s chances of a schizophrenic attack, is itself somewhat– dare I say?– schizophrenic. A wee bit further down the page and not too far from the scary part is this:

“If you compare other substances like alcohol or tobacco it may not be as harmful, but what we are saying is neither is it completely safe,” Zammit said in a telephone interview.

Smoking marijuana ups risk of schizophrenia: study

So… sucking smoke that contains mind altering substances into your lungs isn’t completely safe? Big surprise.

Most interesting, of course, is that Zammit seems to imply that alcohol and tobacco are more harmful. So why start the article at, say, DefCon 4 and then water it down to “yeah, there are risks but things that hundreds of millions have consumed for thousands of years are worse.”

Come on, folks. I don’t encourage drug use, but let’s face these things soberly and avoid creating hype which when the bubble bursts, as it will, is only going to create distrust, not to mention a chorus of raised middle fingers. Proof? Try to remember when you were 15. I know its hard. You’ve grown up. You’re mature. You put that all behind you. You’ve earned the right to be ‘adult’ and self-righteous, etc. etc. etc. You know what is good for ‘them’ and damn-it you are going to make ‘em listen even it means bending the truth. Doesn’t work that way.

And that really is the point. I hate the hyperbole that gets wrapped around some of the issues of the day– like drugs, like teen sex, like homosexuality, like immigration… It is all really very self-defeating.

This is a case of misleading statistics; it’s not very scary at all. The risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses is very low; even with a 41% increase in this risk, it’s still low.

These studies show only that marijuana use is a slightly better predictor of a later diagnosis of psychosis; they have not at all established much of a causal mechanism. At best, marijuana might directly trigger schizophrenic or other psychotic episodes in those few already susceptible: Obviously such people should be especially careful about how they modify their brain chemistry.

    Bum,

“Its not that scary at all”

Yeah, I know. The difference between the presentation and the real risk was what motivated the article.

Alcohol and Tobacco however are multi-billion dollar industries and have 10,000 lobbyists roaming the halls of power in Washington. We mustn’t forget that disinformation doesn’t come out of nowhere - companies are paid to lie, often with taxpayer dollars. How could the authros of Just Say No have predicted phenomenons like those internet tube thingies allowing the spreading of information on a global level? In other words: getting called on your bullshit makes you look like an ass.

    Yes, exactly.

Cause and effect is exactly what I wonder about.

One of the characteristic symptoms of schitzophrenia is chain smoking tobacco, because it is a form of self-medication. One would suspect that a similar connection might exist with pot. In other words, people might smoke pot to deal with early symptoms of schitzophrenia, rather than the other way around.

    Ohwilleke,

You know, I had a friend in college who pretty much stayed stoned. I’m sure it was self-medication. I have no doubt that he and everyone around him was better off that way. So yes, I wouldn’t be surprised if the causality assumed (or concluded) in the study was backwards.

marijuana makes people stupid how? by killing brain cells?
alcohol does that too and destroys the liver and lets not forget about the hangover the next day:)

    Devon,

You’re close. Weed makes you stupid by making you incapable of comprehending what you read, or perhaps incapable of even finishing what you start to read.

Whether we talk about alcohol, or marijuana, or tobacco, they are all addictive drugs, and they all have a potential for harming us if used excessively. I am smoker and I realize that my health is getting worse because of that but I can’t quit because I am addicted… My only hope is a rehab center.

All the potheads who say its just an herb and natural need to take their head out of the bong and get real because a drug is still a drug it can ruin lifes.

I will say it publicly, i do smoke marijuana, and yes maybe I am less intelligent that if i wouldnt ( I said maybe ) but one thing is for sure, there are ALOT more people that dont smoke and are completely retarded… Marijuana is not bad, people are bad… the only reason marijuana is illegal today is because of a whole corruption deal with the corporation owning wood/oil/media industries, if you do not belive me look it up , wikipedia , google… it is a very well known fact…

Most of the bad stuff you hear about marijuana is comparable to propaganda… the few studies that are actualy neutral usualy all agree and consider marijuana less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco for your health … anyways sorry im rambling… :P

    Very interesting article,
i smoked cannabis for about 20 years from a early age
and i have been schizophrenic for about 12 years that was when i was diagnosed
but i dont blame it just on the cannabis, i went through alot of stuff in my life, like having my son taken by my ex, then my first daughter died shortly after birth, so i personally would say it was not just the cannabis, but did play a part aswell as my other life stresses.
now i dont smoke anything i quited :)
