SiteMeter Made a Bad Call

posted in Administrative by themaiden |

Well, I had to remove SiteMeter from the site this morning. It seems that the company decided to start placing third party cookies from dg.specificlick.net onto my visitors browsers via their stat counter app. This is annoying. Couple that with this: I found out about dg.specificlick.net because I’ve had some load-time issues and one of the things that was hanging was dg.specificlick.net. That is how I came to investigate them. I noticed that a something on my site was making a call to a web address that I didn’t write into the code. Like I said… annoying.

The information I found:

Did Sitemeter sell out to Spyware?

Sitemeter spyware saga continues…

SiteMeter and Spyware (Sort of)

SiteMeter Responds

Progressive Gold has a fiery rant about the whole thing.

SiteMeter, of course, denies any problem. Their response can be found at the links provided. But I am still not happy. The only tracking cookies I want are the ones I agree to.

If you look at the dates of the posts I’ve cited, you’ll notice that I’m late figuring this out. Sorry folks.

Glad you joined the party in the end.

The bugger is that TTLB base their stats on Site Meter measurements - which reduces the detail I get. I am just a “slimy mollusc”.

    Matt,

Yeah, I thought about that. And it is unfortunate because I just hit “Marauding Marsupial”. In fact, I think the reason I installed SiteMeter to start with was TTLB. Arggg… maybe I’ll shoot them an email.
