The odds?
Even if terrorists were able to pull off one attack per year on the scale of the 9/11 atrocity, that would mean your one-year risk would be one in 100,000 and your lifetime risk would be about one in 1300. (300,000,000 ÷ 3,000 = 100,000 ÷ 78 years = 1282) In other words, your risk of dying in a plausible terrorist attack is much lower than your risk of dying in a car accident, by walking across the street, by drowning, in a fire, by falling, or by being murdered.

“Islam is fundamentally violent.” “The Qur’an commands armed proselytization.” “True Muslims must be jihadists.” “Muslims will not rest until the world is taken by force for Islam.” “Violent jihad is a core Islamic value.”
These kinds of statements are not hard to come by in this modern world, though it is with some irony that I use the term. There are several conceptual reasons for not taking such statements seriously, one of which is hinted at in the title. One and a half billion people is one hell of an army. The United States has two and a half to three million under arms right now. We could probably muster 30 or 40 million if needed– in WWII about 16 million served. The French military– the largest in Europe– sits at around 800,000. By comparison, France has about 5 to 6 million Muslims. What is the point?

In several of my exchanges with Foehammer– notably in “FoeHammer’s Grey Matter” but also in “Jihad will destroy us?”– I’ve been challenged to “attack FoeHammer’s facts not to attack the ‘blog-persona/man-thing’”. So here are some facts, as Foe was quick to point out, the article was written by an anonymous third party. However, Foe endorses it– “I think it does an excellent job of expanding in greater detail on ideas that I have myself outlined here on the Anvil before, so it is worth reposting here.”
