Now, the sex I understand. Sex runs deep, like eating and breathing and otherwise not dying. Sex makes sense. Drugs that help make sex happen make sense. Drugs that make man parts swell to gargantuan proportions and stay that way for way too long are… well… complete and utter nonsense on several levels but insofar as they hook into male paranoia and male– yes, male– fantasy they make sense. Sex sells. That makes sense.

Ringtones make no sense. This bothers me deeply. Those stupid song clips that amuse you but make your friends, family, neighbors and strangers hate you like nuns hate sin… those rank up there with copulation? Really? That scares me. Given that the point of spammie keywords is to attract webtraffic, this must mean that there are comparable numbers of people looking to annoy their compatriots as there are people looking for breasts, buttocks and penis. That’s really just wrong.

The story, the day the music died, is a sad tale of corporate shenanagins and consumer pain. Read the article and ask yourself, “Where exactly is that invisible hand in all of this?”

The answer I’d like to propose is that it doesn’t exist. It isn’t there, not in the way that most of your hard right free market proponents need it to be. Ponder. I’m going to leave it at that for now, though if you wondering why I claim to not bash Smith but only the right wing twits who never read him: Smith “made it clear in his writings that quite considerable structure was required in society before the invisible hand mechanism could work efficiently.” The twits tend to forget that ‘considerable social structure’ part and head straight for ‘get the government the hell out of everything’ thus creating what I like to think of as a government so minimal that it stops working.

The trick then is to generate power without killing ourselves in the process. And that is quite a trick, but I don’t think it is impossible. I’ve made a few offhand comments on the topic.

Restricting carbon emissions does not equate directly to reducing the production of energy. More efficient engines mean the same power and less carbon, for example. I also happen to like nuclear power, especially the metal cooled hot reactors. Solar is minimally viable right now and we have enough wind to completely replace the fossil fuel plants, but the infrastructure required for the latter would be expensive.

Another example of the same strategy:

Biofuels like Ethanol, as it is currently produced anyway, are not the solution. It is idiotic to burn as fuel what you can eat as food. Its a bit like raising cattle so you can throw them in the furnace for winter heat. Dumb. Burning old grease from a restaurant as biodiesel? Great. Fermenting wood chips from a sawmill to produce alcohol fuels? Fine. Commiting cropland to raising corn so that you can make ethanol? Stupid.

What these strategies mean, by the way, is that people are going to have to stop whining and crying about how ugly the wind farms are and about how the solar panels ruin the ‘feel’ of the neighborhood. Sorry folks but unless you want to re-enact the 1700s, get over it. That, though, is another story for another time.

The United States was founded on a strong set of principles, most if not all of which I favor by the way. But lets think about something else. Since its founding, people in the United States have had a kind of religious zeal about those founding principles. Politics seems to be eternally about returning to an earlier age. The suggestion is that the such an earlier stage somehow approached perfect and hence all we can do is preserve it. We can try not to stray too far from our foundations but we have little hope of doing better. Whether the founders thought of it this way is a different question.

Now, there is another case very similar but it has been instantiated for a longer period of time– about 1300 years to the United State’s 250 odd. This other instance also has a history of considering the founding a point of perfection, at least in the view of many in latter generations and many in many living currently. Again, whether this was the intent at founding is another question. The result has been widespread social and political stagnation, and the rise not a few dictators and considerable violence. Any guesses at this other instantiation?

That laptop was new when I bought it and is, physically, the best box in my collection– the rest of the set being mostly Frankenstein monsters cobbled together from dead or dying predecessors. In other words, the rest of my machines are old, out of date and ad hoc. The laptop should run circles around them. It doesn’t. In fact, it, with its 1.6 Ghz processor and revolutionary Vista OS crawls along behind– just barely behind to be fair– an ancient (probably, as I can’t remember anymore) 500Mhz box running Slackware 9. Slackware, for those not in the know is now in release 11. The box in question runs 9 because the hardware doesn’t support anything higher, judging from the fact that I can’t any higher version to install. That should give you a guess at the age. Did I mention that this same Slackware 9, 500Mhz box, also runs a local Apache server, a MySQL server, and serves are my LAN’s SAMBA and print server? And it still just barely outpaces Vista running on a laptop that has nothing really to do but surf the web and run OpenOffice.

Now, you may have come to the conclusion that my laptop is slow. I don’t think you realize just how slow. It takes a good four or five minutes to boot and a good three or four to wake up. Then, even after it appears to be up and running you have to wait several additional minute before trying to start an application or, well, the system freezes for however long it feels like. And then… maybe its just me… but I feel like ripping my hair out when it takes 45 seconds to backspace over a typo.

Did I also mention that my laptop is something like 17 updates behind? Why? Because the updates never complete. Ever. Not one at a time. Not all in mass. Never. The system just prepares and prepares and prepares and prepares… but never actually updates.

I know I’m not really a technical blog but sometimes you just have to bitch. Plus, I ran across a much less bitchie and much more rational post about Vista and it set me off. I also stole the title from a line in that article.

IT HAS BEEN a year since Vista was released, and I said I could not in good conscience go there. Since then, Vista has gotten a thorough airing, has been debated more than anything in recent memory, and for the vast majority, the chrome has worn off the turd.

A new study of recreational drug use out of the UK has reached some startling conclusions. The study headed up by professor David Nutt of Britain’s Bristol University and his colleagues have proposed a new framework for classifying recreational drugs and harmful substances. Within this new framework alcohol and tobacco were listed higher on the danger scale then other more notorious drugs like: LSD, Ecstasy and Cannabis (more commonly referred to as marijuana). Here is the list of the twenty harmful substances with the number one spot and title of most harmful drug going to Heroin.

Interesting isn’t it? The ’safe’ drug is more dangerous than the one that makes you see things that aren’t there.

The Big Four aren’t really that surprising, though I’d have guessed that meth would rank higher still:

I like the approach the this researcher has taken. The study is in effect an attempt to rethink attitudes toward particular drugs, with an eye to law. I won’t argue that some drugs need to be regulated, but it is hard to deny that current drug laws are confused collections of old prejudice and weird mythology. David Nutt focused the right issues: “The physical harm done to the user, the drugs potential for addiction, and its impact on society as a whole.” As an evaluation of potential danger, he seems to have nailed it. Honestly though, insofar as this study is used in lawmaking, I’d prefer it if the focus were entirely on the impact on society as a whole because, 1) the other two concerns reduce to that third one in large part and 2) that is the only basis on which we have any business crafting legislation.

A woman in Germany who became pregnant after an online sex auction has won a court battle to force the Web site that hosted the sale to reveal the names of the winners, so she can find out who’s the father.

Six different men won Internet auctions to have sex with the woman in April and May last year. They were only known to her by their online names, a spokesman for a court in the southwestern city of Stuttgart said Wednesday.

“The woman wanted to discover which one of the men had made her pregnant,” the spokesman said. “So she needed their contact details. Of course, if they’re not willing to go along with the gene test, she’ll have to take them to court.”

The purpose of this survey is to examine how people think and feel about the political issues, parties, and candidates in the upcoming election. In the survey, you will be asked a series of questions about two political candidates, John McCain and Hillary Clinton. We are very interested in how individuals that find information on the web think about politics, and your participation would be greatly appreciated.
